Is there anything good about public schools?  


Yes.  There are many good, caring teachers, administrators and personnel, as well as thousands of parent and community volunteers. 

But...

Some of the best people in America become teachers.  We're saying that the system itself is bad and that these good people are ultimately fighting a losing battle. They are to be admired for their hard work and commitment to children, but if we want true excellence in education, the best thing we can do is find ways to free the good teachers to really teach. As it is now, many of them feel trapped by their lack of options.

We could fill pages with quotes from frustrated teachers.  A huge percentage of these teachers leave the system each year -- usually for other careers. But increasingly, they're leaving to pursue creative teaching options in the private sector. We'll talk about that later, but for now it's important to know that it's not only parents who are frustrated and searching for alternatives.
